Life is happening now!

An audio book I used to listen to on my way to and from work called Happier, discussed the different ways people view life. There are many types of people, one is called the "rat racer". They continue to strive for goals or work towards something in hopes that it will make their life happier. Substituting short-term pain for long-term gain. They think that once they get that degree, or get a new job, or get more money that their life will be "fixed" and they will be happier.
The fact is that it usually gives the rat racer temporary happiness, and then they go back to complaining about things and striving for the next thing. Listening to this audio book really hit home. I always thought that I needed to go to college, because then I well get a good job and be happy. Then I should go to Graduate school to get a job I really like, because then I will be happy in all aspects in my life. Or I need to do X and life will slow down and I can finally enjoy it. Or people say they cannot wait to retire because then they can do the things they want finally and by happy.
The reality is your life is happing now! How many times have you looked back a few years or back to when you were young and thought how much fun that was?! In the moment you were probably waiting to grow up so you could have more freedom, or couldn't wait until next year for X,Y and Z.
Happiness comes from within you, it is not made up of the things you accomplish or the money you have. I love the quote, "Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory". -Dr. Suess. It is the truth! Those Sunday mornings as a kid waking up to the smell of bacon and hearing polkas playing from the stereo just seemed like another boring Sunday at home. Well now I look back and cherish those Sundays!
Stop and take time for your family and friends. Soon it will be another month gone by and those moments will be gone. Hug your loved ones, tomorrow is never a guarantee for anyone.
